VALLEY, Ala. – Rafa Hewett (Lewiston, Id – FR) was named Saturday to the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) All Conference team in his freshman year after having a winning record against the top competition the conference had to offer.
Hewett, a two-time Idaho state tennis champion and 2-star recruit on tennisrecruiting.com, went 18-10 this season overall in singles, playing line one all year. "At line one you are normally playing international talent in college tennis and I believe that was a tough adjustment for Rafa", said head coach Doug Carter. "It took a little while to build up his game and realize he couldn't necessarily overpower these guys the way he could in juniors or in high school. I was really impressed and proud of him for the adjustments he made as the spring moved along. With the foundation Rafa gives us, the future is bright!"
When asked about his thoughts about the competition Hewett said, "I felt the competition was pretty tough each match and I knew playing at line one as a freshman wasn't going to be easy, every match was a grind. I was pretty happy with my game for the year and I felt blessed being All Conference."
The Skyhawks were a first year tennis team and Hewett was the first award winner for the team. His overall win-loss record for the year was 32-24 in both singles and doubles combined, all at the top line. Hewett further said, "I am thankful for the teammates I have and love the way we put up a fight during our first season at Point University (13-12). I want to thank Coach Carter for an amazing first year at Point!"
