Women's Cross Country - Mon, Sep. 10, 2012

Running in sunny 89-degree weather on hilly terrain at North Georgia Technical College, the Point University women's cross country team took first place in a field of 11 teams (see results below). The Skyhawks outpaced junior college powerhouse Darton State College and North Georgia College to take home the title. Junior Paola Gonzalez (Lancaster, Calif.) finished third overall; junior Susana Marquez (Garden Grove, Calif. pictured bottom left) finished fourth overall; and freshman Savannah Hanna (Alexander City, Ala.) came in seventh. Rounding out the scoring for the Skyhawks was freshman Riley Morrison (Rincon, Ga.) and freshman Victoria Perez (Decatur, Ga.) finishing 17th and 20th. Senior captain Tori Linder (Dacula, Ga.) was sixth for the Skyhawks and 51st overall, while sophomore Katie Crumbley (McDonough, Ga.) was seventh for the Skyhawks and 59th overall.

"The women really wanted this team title today. We talked all week about how this would be a tough race physically and mentally as the heat and hills would test their toughness. They all proved how tough they were today," stated Mike Caldwell, cross country head coach.

Paola Gonzalez (right picture) commented after the race: "I felt it was a great race and a great course, so I took advantage of the opportunity. As a team, I feel we did excellent and I am proud of our team for winning the race."

The Point University women will be back in action as they travel to Mercer University this Saturday to run the Run Fit Invitational where 21 colleges and universities are scheduled to run, making it one of the most competitive races in Georgia this fall.
