As a young team, the Point University men's tennis program played a tough tournament this weekend in New Orleans.
Daniel Blanchard (Peachtree City, GA-FR) opened up the action with a nice win in his round of 64 match against Alexander Puyol of Belhaven, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3). He was lined up against the #20 player in the nation and 7th seed in the tournament next, Miguel Grifol of AUM in which he was defeated 6-0, 6-1. Robert Hays (Auburn, AL-SO) also won his round of 64 match by handling Jim Scott of Belhaven, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 12-10. In the round of 32, he got the 6th seed, #21 in the nation, Nikita Soifer from Xavier. He went down 6-0, 6-2. Alonso Trevizo (El Paso, TX-FR) lost his round of 64 match to Xavier, but then rebounded in his first consolation round match to pound Emmanuel Benjamin of Loyola, 8-2. Nate Moore had a big first-round win over Belhaven's Andrew Day 6-0, 6-0, but was later knocked out by Xavier's Kevin Chaouat.
In doubles, Daniel and Alonso played a nail biter with Belhaven, but just couldn't slam the door shut losing 8-6.
"Overall, I was really pleased with our kids play; they are growing from the tough competition. The guys play again Wednesday here at home in a team match against Piedmont College. We will continue to try to build up on our tennis foundations and find good teams for doubles" commented head coach Doug Carter.
