Women's Cross Country - Sun, Sep. 29, 2013

The Point University women's cross country team continues to impress as they finished second overall at the Mercer Invitational in a field of 15 colleges (10 scored). The Mercer Invitational is a good mix of schools from various levels as there were six NCAA ll colleges, two NCAA lll colleges, four NAIA Colleges and three Junior Colleges. All 15 schools were from the state of Georgia.

The Skyhawks placed four women in the top 12 overall. Leading the way was senior Susana Marquez who finished 4th overall in a time of 19:57. Coming on strong after a knee injury this past summer and finishing 8th overall was Savannah Hanna (20:31). Rounding out the scoring for the Skyhawks was Esther Estrada (10th overall, 20:38), Jacqueline Escobedo (12th overall, 20:48) and Kenya Gonzalez ( 21:53). Finishing 6th, 7th and 8th for Point was Shelby Biddle (22:44) who has been battling a foot injury, Kati Williams (23:54) and Katie Crumbley who ran a personal best in a time of 24:23. Sitting out this race was senior all-conference runner Paola Gonzalez with a high ankle sprain. "I was happy with the girls' effort today. To place four girls in the top 12 is impressive. Unfortunately, Paola did not run because she would have made it five girls in the top 13, which would have been hard to beat. The performance today is one we can build on as we need to continue to work hard in order to get faster for the bigger races ahead," commented Coach Caldwell.

The Lady Skyhawks will be back in action Saturday as they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to run in the largest cross country race in the United States.
