Women's Cross Country - Thu, Jul. 11, 2013

Esther Estrada, one of the top runners for Pima Community College, has decided to run for the Skyhawks. Her team finished 7th in the nation this past Fall at the Junior College Cross Country Championships. In her last two races at Pima, Estrada finished 13th overall in Region 1 with a time of 20:12 in the 5K race. She followed that up with a 78th overall placing in the nation at the National Championships in Illinois on a windy day running 20:27.

"Esther is very mature and focused. She is determined to come to Point and improve as a runner and leave with a degree. We are very excited to have her join our women's team and we know she will make a tremendous impact at Point," commented Head Coach Michael Caldwell.

Pima Community College Head Coach Cross Country and Track Coach Greg Wenneborg has high praise for the future Skyhawk.

"Esther will be a great team member at Point University.  Her improvement from year one to two was substantial and I see even more potential in the coming years.  Esther was a solid contributor to our program on the cross country course and in the classroom .

Estrada plans to major in Psychology at Point University.

Q and A with Esther Estrada:

Q: Why did you decide to come to Point?
A: The reason I decided to attend Point University was not only because of the scholarship offer to compete there but I saw it as an opportunity to continue my education and to graduate in two years with a Psychology degree. Not only that, but I would be the first of my family to get a college degree. Attending out of state  will help me accomplish so much more knowing that I am making my family proud. Cross country is one of the most important things to me, along with my education, and getting the chance to run and experience another part of the country is something I didn't expect. I think this is a once in a life time opportunity.

Q: What are some of the goals you have for this coming season?
A: I am coming here to help Point win a conference title. I also want to help the team qualify for nationals and with hard work place in the top ten. I also have goals to improve my time as much as I can as well as motivating the team to work their hardest. I believe in team work. Some people think of cross country as an individual sport, but I look at it at it from a team point a view because without those other runners there would be no team.
