Paola Gonzalez (Lancaster, Calif.) (pictured right) and Susana Marquez (Garden Grove, Calif.) (pictured left) competed in the 2012 Cross Country National Championships at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Washington state this past weekend. Paola and Susana are the first athletes at Point University to ever compete in a NAIA National Championship since the University made the move to the NAIA level in the spring of 2011. The girls earned the right to compete due to their top five finish among runners not on the winning team at the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Cross Country meet this past fall. Paola and Susana ran the 5K course virtually side by side as Paola posted a 20:39 finish (237th overall) and Susana finished in a time of 20:40 (238th overall).

"I am very proud of Susana and Paola for the season they had and the way they battled in every race this year and today was no exception. I hope they enjoyed this great opportunity as it was a reward for all the hard work they have put into their training," commented Coach Caldwell after the race.
Race time temperatures were in the 40's with a slight wind and drizzle. There were 320 finishers in the race and 250 of them finished within 3 minutes of each other. "The conditions and the large pack had to slow down all the runners in that 19 to 21 minute range as it was bumper to bumper out there for a good portion of the race. The one thing I took away from the race was that there is a lot of talent running at the NAIA level throughout this country. Our returning girls and new recruits will have to work hard this winter, spring and summer if they want to be considered among the top 30 teams in the country at the NAIA level and possibly earn a spot to the NAIA National Championships as a team," stated Coach Caldwell.
