MONTGOMERY, Ala.   Point University men's tennis competed at the John McWilliams Fall Invitational, hosted by Huntingdon College in Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala., Sept. 15-17.  Two Point doubles pairs and one singles player won their consolation draws.

The tournament field included LaGrange College (Ga.), Millsaps College (Miss.), Oglethorpe University (Ga.) and the host school Huntingdon College (Ala.), all members of the NCAA Division III, along with Point University from the NAIA.

"This is a great tournament that allows every player in our program to put on the Point uniform and fight for their team," commented head coach Chad Simpson (fourth season).  "Coach Stewart and I were able to take away at least one area in which each player needs to improve, so we will be diligent to tackle those in practice.  We will have to step up our level next weekend at the ITA South Regionals, since we have the toughest region in the nation."

Junior Steven Tracy (Saint Simons Island, GA), who also is a member of Point's men's cross country team, split sets with Avinash Ananth from Millsaps, 6-4 and 3-6, and then won a 10-5 tiebreaker in Flight 2 singles.   Tracy then won set one but lost set two and the decisive tiebreaker set to Matt Magee from Oglethorpe, 6-1 and 10-8.  Also in Flight 2 singles, junior Kyle Howell (Guyton, GA) lost his first-round match to Davis Plummer from Millsaps, 6-2 and 6-1, and won his consolation match over Adam Self from Huntingdon, 6-3 and 6-3.

In Flight 4 singles, junior Kaleb Sosebee (Jefferson, GA) lost his first-round match against Caleb Edde from La Grange, 6-4 and 6-2, and won his consolation draw match against Trevor McLemore from LaGrange.

Freshman Matthew Bagley (Waycross, GA) lost his debut match at Flight 5 singles against Calvin Schneider from Oglethorpe, 6-2 and 6-1, and then won his consolation match, 6-3 and 6-2, over Brian Deason from Millsaps.  Freshman Alex Tongson (Columbus, GA) also lost his Flight 5 debut match against John Mitchell Benton from LaGrange, 6-3 and 6-1, and also lost his consolation match to Nathan Brown from LaGrange in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-=4.

In Flight 1 doubles, Tracy and Howell lost their first-round match against Richard Johnson and Walker Benson from Oglethorpe, 8-5, and defeated John Jones and Bailey Burns from Huntingdon in a consolation match, 8-1.  In Flight 2 doubles, Ncube and Sosebee lost their first match together, 8-4, to Adam Self and Ben Marler, and defeated Geoffrey Martin and Kyle Kelley from LaGrange, 8-3, in a consolation match.

Bagley and Tongson lost an 8-3 super set in the first round at Flight 3 doubles to Ananth and Cameron Doles from Millsaps and defeated Huntingdon's Kasey Callazo and Ethan Fuller in a consolation match, 8-5.
