Men's Tennis - Sun, Sep. 10, 2017

COCHRAN, Ga.   Point University men's tennis began its 2017-18 season with second-place finishes in Flight A singles and Flight A doubles at the Middle Georgia State University Fall Invitational, Sept. 8-10, in Cochran, Ga.

The tournament field included Lee University (Tenn.), and Georgia Southwestern State University from the NCAA Division II and NAIA members University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), host Middle Georgia State University, and Point University.  College of Coastal Georgia, also an NAIA member, withdrew from the competition due to its preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Irma.

"Point's men's team made a good showing this weekend," commented head coach Chad Simpson (Fourth season).  "We were able to learn a lot about three of our newest players – they are fighers with a lot of skill and high character.  We definitely have areas that we need to improve, especially our doubles awareness and ability to dictate the short ball to finish points at the net.  We are excited to get back to the practice court and address these areas to get better for our next competition."

Freshman Joe Klokow (Kennesaw, GA) won two of his three matches in Flight A singles and placed second.  Klokow defeated Rhys Milne from Lee University, 7-5 and 6-4, in a quarterfinal match and qualified for the flight final with a come-from-behind victory over Octavio Tamola from Middle Georgia State, 6-7, 6-4 and 1-0.  Nishanth Rebello from Middle Georgia State, who ranks 36th in the NAIA, won the final over Klokow in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-0.

Sophomore Federico Barbon (Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina) split a pair of singles matches in Flight A, defeating Igor Schattan from Lee University, 6-1 and 6-3, and losing his quarterfinal against Rebello, 7-6, 6-7, 1-0.

Junior Sam Blackburn (Enterprise, AL) defeated Daniel Prata from Lee University in the first round of Flight B singles, 6-3 and 6-0, and later lost in the quarterfinals to Alavaro Conesa from Middle Georgia State, 6-0 and 6-2.

In Flight A doubles, Barbon and Klokow won their first-round match over Milne and Boyd Blackburn from Lee University, 8-6, and also defeated Axel Lucich and Thiago Lopes from University of the Cumberlands in the semifinals, 8-6.  In the flight finals, Tamola and Conesa from Middle Georgia State prevailed over the Point pair, 8-4.
