LAKE WALES, Fla. – Down by seven at halftime, the Point University Skyhawks (1-0) used a second-half touchdown and field goal to take a three-point lead over Webber International (0-1), enroute to a 10-7 season-opening victory in Saturday, Aug. 26 Mid-South Conference intercollegiate football action at Legion Field in Lake Wales, Fla.  A weather delay lasting one hour and fifty minutes temporarily halted play with 5:40 remaining in the fourth quarter.


Point's defense held the Warriors to 212 yards of total offense, with the Skyhawk's secondary limiting Webber to just 61 yards through the air.  Point's offense finished with 348 total yards of offense, with junior quarterback Derek Bellard (Lake Charles, LA) completing 15 of 33 passes with two interceptions, one touchdown, while also rushing for 93 yards on 13 carries.


Down 7-0 in the third quarter, Bellard connected with senior receiver Ricardo Sloan (Albany, GA) to cap a 5:02 drive, tying the game with 9:51 left in the third quarter, 7-7.


After a change of possession, the Skyhawk's defense forced a Webber punt with 2:08 left in the third quarter, and after going 54 yards in seven plays, Point took its first lead of the contest when freshman kicker Jordan Bell (Jacksonville, FL) connected on a 29 yard field goal to put the Skyhawks up by three points, 10-7, which would prove to be the final score of the game.


Senior wide receiver Charles Ducksworth (Mt. Olive, MS) finished with a team-high four receptions for 76 yards, and senior running back La'Darrius Mathis (Riverdale, GA) carried the ball 14 times for 30 yards.


Junior linebacker Kadaymen Johnson (Jackson, MS) led all Skyhawks with 10 total tackles, two for a loss, and a sack, senior linebacker K.J. Minniefield (Spanish Fort, AL) finished with five and a half total tackles, one and a half for a loss, and sophomore defensive back Kendall Hillman (Jonesboro, GA) recorded three tackles and five pass break-ups.


Next Game: Coached by second-year head coach Julius Dixon, the Skyhawks will host Campbellsville University for their Mid-South Conference home-opener at Ram Stadium in Valley, Ala. on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
