KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Truett McConnell University (30-25) defeated Point University (33-20), 9-1, in Thursday, May 4 Appalachian Athletic Conference postseason baseball action at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.  The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Point and the Skyhawks will now face an elimination game against Bryan College Friday, May 5, at 1 p.m. eastern time (please note time change due to rain).

Friday's tournament schedule has changed -- the Tennessee Wesleyan vs. Reinhardt winner's bracket game was suspended in the sixth inning and will resume at 11 a.m.  The Point vs. Bryan elimination game, which was scheduled for 9 a.m., has been moved to 1 p.m.  The Union College vs. TWU-Reinhardt loser plays at 4 p.m.  Truett-McConnell awaits the Point vs. Bryan winner on Saturday at 9 a.m. (rather than at 4 p.m. Friday) in the Pool B final, while the Pool A final .will be played at 12 noon.  The championship game has been changed to 4 p.m.  Keep up-to-date by clicking this link.


Catcher Juan Reyes (JR/Santo Domingo, D.R.) put the Skyhawks ahead early with a solo shot over the rightfield fence with two outs in the top of the first inning.  TMU responded in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs on three hits and held a 2-1 advantage going into the second inning.


The Bears offense picked up where it left off in the bottom of the second, adding four more runs on two hits; including a three-run homer from third baseman Patrick Overstreet, giving TMU a 6-1 lead heading into the third inning.


TMU's added another run in the fifth inning of the contest on a solo home run off the bat of Overstreet once again, added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, and held Point scoreless after the first inning enroute to earning a victory over the Skyhawks, 9-1.


Point starting pitcher Garrett Brown (JR/Valley, AL) (5-5) suffered his fifth loss of the season and allowed five hits, six runs, one walk, and recorded no strikeouts. Right-hander Jesse Ford (JR/Phenix City, AL) replaced Brown in the third inning and allowed three hits, one run, two walks, and struck out two in three innings of work.  Relievers Levi Knight (JR/Locust Grove, GA), Blake Lorow (SR/Sharpsburg, GA), and Will Ziebol (JR/Phenix City, AL) pitched the final three innings and combined to allow three hits, two runs, three walks, and no strikeouts.


TMU starter Gregory Elder improved his record to 8-4 and allowed four hits, one run, seven walks, and struck out nine Skyhawks in a complete nine innings on the mound.


Reyes extended his hitting streak to seven games with his solo home run and went 1-for-4 on the day, centerfielder Bryce Jay (SR/Gardendale, AL) finished 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to seven games, and rightfielder Anthony Padron (SR/Columbus, GA) and shortstop Nathan Greene (JR/Rex, GA) were the only other Skyhawks to add a hit.


NEXT GAME:  Coached by John Tyler, the Skyhawks now face Bryan College (36-17) in an elimination game on Friday, May 5, at 1 p.m. eastern time.  Point took two of three in its AAC series with the Lions earlier in the regular season, March 31- April 1.
