ROME, Ga. – Point University men's tennis (13-8) won its regular-season finale, 6-3, at Shorter University (4-13), April 12, in Rome, Ga., and improved its record against NCAA Division II teams to 6-1.  The Skyhawks won three singles matches, one doubles match and two matches by default.

 

Head coach Chad Simpson commented, "Today, we did not bring our "A" game.  We will need two sharp weeks of practice in order to bring out best at the AAC Championship at the end of April."

 

Point won at number two and three doubles and took a 2-1 lead into singles.  Shorter won numbers one and two singles, but Point clinched the match with wins at numbers three, four, five and six singles.  Rafa Hewett (SR/Lewiston, ID) and number one doubles partner, Daniel Blanchard (SR/Peachtree City, GA) lost at number one doubles, 8-4, against Jose Moreno Manzano and Talha Zubair from Shorter.  Hewett and Blanchard are 14-4 together in doubles.

 

At number two doubles, Asad Siyyid (SO/Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and Steven Tracy (SO/Saint Simons Island, GA) defeated Mason Barnette and Patrick Sanders, 8-3.  Point took a default win at number three doubles.  Siyyid and Tracy are 8-5 together.

 

Siyyid and Hewett lost at number one and number two singles respectively.  Moreno Manzano was leading in set one, 5-2, when Siyyid (16-11) defaulted the match due to injury.  Zubair defeated Hewett (19-12) at number two singles, 6-3, 7-6, with a 6-1 tiebreaker deciding the winner.

 

Blanchard won his number three singles match against Sanders, 6-2, 6-3, and improved his singles record to 14-9.  Hewett and Blanchard rank number one and two in career doubles victories with 66 and 61 respectively and rank first and second in career singles wins with 60 and 51.

 

Point's Alonso Trevizo (SR/El Paso, TX), now 9-6, prevailed in three sets against Barnette at the number four singles position after losing set one, 6-4, and winning the last two sets, 6-1 and 6-1.  Steven Tracy (14-15) defeated Dylan Wood, 6-0, 6-0, at number five singles.  Point was awarded a default at number six singles where Shorter had no player.

 

NEXT COMPETITION:  Point men's tennis competes April 28-30, at the AAC Championships which will be played at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
