WEST POINT, Ga. – Point University (26-18) swept its non-conference doubleheader from Southern Wesleyan University (8-32), 1-0 in eight innings, and 1-0 in seven innings on Tuesday, April 11, on West Point Park Field in West Point, Ga.

Point's pitchers shutout Southern Wesleyan in both games and allowed a combined six hits and struck out 14 batters.  Point is now 10-8 in one-run games this season, and is 4-0 in games in which only one run is scored.

GAME ONE:  Point starting pitcher Ryan Simpson (SO/Cusseta, AL) (13-9) won her fourth consecutive decision and allowed just two hits, one walk, and stuck out three batters in a complete-game shutout, her thirteenth complete game of the season.

Neither team's offense was able to push across any runs during the first seven innings of competition, but Point was able to score its only run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth to walk-off with the victory.

The international tie-breaker was used in the bottom of the eighth since it was a non-conference game, and third baseman Madyson Brown (JR/Valley, AL) was placed on second base to start the inning.  The first batter in the inning struck out, and after a wild pitch, Brown advanced to third.  The next batter, first baseman Shea Pendley (SO/Chatsworth, GA) drew a walk with one out, and Brown came across to score when the next batter, catcher Brooke Williams (JR/Valley, AL) reached first base on a bunt single, giving the Skyhawks the walk-off win in game one, 1-0.

Southern Wesleyan starter Josie Edwards (4-13) took the loss and allowed five hits, one run, three walks, and struck out one in a complete 7-2/3 innings pitched.

GAME TWO:  Both offenses were quiet once again in game two, but the Skyhawks were able to plate their one and only run of the ballgame in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Pendley, scoring centerfielder Amber Anderson (SR/Hazel Green, AL) who had smacked a double to deep center earlier in the inning with one out.

Point starter Allie Beilstein (FR/Montgomery, AL) improved her season record to 11-8 and allowed four hits, one walk, and struck out a season-high 11 batters in a complete-game shutout, leading to a win for the Skyhawks in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader, 1-0.

Southern Wesleyan starter Lucy Wolff (1-8) suffered the loss and allowed six hits, one run, one walk, and struck out two in a complete six innings pitched.

Pendley finished the day with a combined four hits, a walk, and one RBI, leftfielder Leslie Hinkle (SR/Lafayette, AL) added two hits on the day; including one double, and Brown and Anderson scored the only two runs of the day for the Skyhawks.

NEXT GAMES:  Coached by Jennifer Perkins Tyler, the Skyhawks host a home doubleheader against Judson College (Ala.), Wednesday, April 12, at 4 p.m., and also host an Appalachian Athletics Conference home doubleheader against Columbia College (S.C.), Friday, April 14, at 2 p.m.
