ATLANTA, Ga. --  Point University men's tennis (12-7; 4-2 AAC) won at number one doubles and number four singles, but second-place Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta won the other seven matches and defeated the Skyhawks, 7-2, in Friday, April 7 Appalachian Athletics Conference action in Atlanta.


The Skyhawks sit in fourth place in the AAC standings behind 15th–ranked Reinhardt University (9-5; 6-0 AAC), Point's April 10 opponent at the Sportsplex in Valley, Ala.; SCAD-Atlanta; and 18th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan, which defeated Point, 6-3, on March 24.


Co-captain Rafa Hewett (SR/Lewiston, ID) commented, "We came out of the gate slow in singles, but it was great to see everyone fighting back and playing close matches."  Point took the number one and five singles matches to three sets and also decided matches at number one doubles and number four singles with tiebreakers.

Hewett and number one doubles partner, Daniel Blanchard (SR/Peachtree City, GA), improved their overall season record to 14-2 and conference record to 6-0 with a 9-8 victory over SCAD-Atlanta's Alberto Menendez and Patric Toren.  Hewett and Blanchard decided the match by winning a tiebreaker, 10-8.  Hewett and Blanchard rank number one and two in career doubles victories with 66 and 61 respectively, and also ranked first and second in career singles wins with 58 and 49 respectively.


Blanchard also won his number four singles match over Toren, 6-4, 7-6, with a 7-2 tiebreaker victory.  He is 12-9 in singles this season.


At number two doubles, Asad Siyyid (SO/Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and Steven Tracy (SO/Saint Simons Island, GA) lost 8-3 against Chandler Saunders and Marcel DuSart and at number three doubles, Kyle Howell (SO/Guyton, GA) and Alonso Trevizo (SR/El Paso, TX) lost an 8-2 super set against Jonah Tewes-McCoy and Nick Runac.


Siyyid, who owns a team-best 15 number one singles victories in dual matches this season, lost a three-set match against Menendez despite winning set one, 6-3.  Menendez captured set two, 6-3, and set three, 6-4.  Siyyid is 16-9 in singles this season and 14-9 in doubles, including six wins in 11 matches with Tracy at number two doubles.


Hewett lost at number two singles, 6-2, 7-5, against Saunders, and SCAD's Marcel DuSart defeated Trevizo (8-5), 6-2, 6-4, at number three singles.  Tracy (12-15) split the first two sets of his number five singles match against Runac, losing set one, 6-4, winning set two, 6-1, and losing set three, 6-2.  Howell (8-12) lost 6-0, 6-0 at number six singles against Tewes-McCoy.


NEXT MATCHES:  Point men's tennis plays an Appalachian Athletics Conference home match against 15th-ranked Reinhardt University (9-5; 6-0 AAC), Monday, April 10, at 1 p.m. at the Sportsplex in Valley, Ala.  The Skyhawks also play their final regular-season dual match at Shorter University in Rome, Ga., an NCAA Division II team, Wednesday, April 12, at 2 p.m.


Point also competes April 28-30, at the AAC Championships, which will be played at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
