WEST POINT, Ga. – Point University (22-18; 10-8 AAC) defeated Union College (Ky.) (22-23; 10-4 AAC), 1-0 in game one, and lost game two, 4-2, in Appalachian Athletic Conference softball action, Friday, April 7, in West Point, Ga.

GAME ONE:  Point starting pitcher Ryan Simpson (SO/Cusseta, AL) (12-9) earned the win and tossed her third shutout of the season, allowing five hits, no walks, and striking out seven batters in a complete seven innings of work.  Union starter Rachel Rhode (12-12) suffered her twelfth loss of the season and allowed four hits, one run, three walks, and struck out nine Skyhawks in six innings pitched.

The Skyhawks scored what would prove to be the only run of the game for either team in the bottom of the third inning.  Rightfielder Mikayla Owen (SR/Bradenton, FL) led off the inning with a single up the middle and later advanced to second on a wild pitch.  The next two Point batters drew walks to load the bases, and the following two Skyhawks struck out to create a two-out bases loaded situation.

With catcher Brooke Williams (JR/Valley, AL) at the plate, the Bulldog's pitcher threw her second wild pitch of the inning, allowing Owen to score, giving Point a one-run lead that it would hold for the rest of the contest enroute to a win over Union in game one, 1-0.

Owen finished the game with two hits and one run scored, and Williams and third baseman Madyson Brown (JR/Valley, AL) each added one hit for the Skyhawks.

GAME TWO:  Union got off to a quick start by plating three runs in the top of the first, scoring three runs on three hits.

Point scored its first run of the contest in the bottom of the first, when shortstop Sadie Proctor (FR/Newnan, GA) reached on an error and was later knocked in by an RBI double off the bat of first baseman Shea Pendley (SO/Chatsworth, GA), cutting the Bulldogs lead to two runs after the first inning, 3-1.

Union added one more run in the top of the second inning to retake a three run advantage.  Point scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh and threatened to tie the game with two runners on base, but the rally was cut short when the Bulldogs forced turned a double play to end the game, giving them a split of the series and a victory in game two, 4-2.

Point starter Allie Beilstein (FR/Montgomery, AL) (9-8) suffered the loss and allowed six hits, four runs; three earned, one walk, and struck out five in a complete seven innings of work.  Union starter Kaylee Childers (4-5) earned her fourth win of the season and allowed seven hits, two runs; one earned, one walk, and struck out two batters in a complete seven innings of work.

Proctor finished with two hits, and Pendley finished with two hits and two RBI.

NEXT GAMES:  Coached by Jennifer Perkins Tyler, the Skyhawks host Concordia College in West Point, Georgia for a doubleheader, Saturday, April 8, starting at 2 p.m.  The seven senior softball players for Point will be honored between the two games of the doubleheader.
