Women's Tennis - Sun, Feb. 26, 2017

VALLEY, Ala. – The Point University women's tennis team (3-4) won four singles matches and one doubles match in a 5-4 victory over Blue Mountain College (2-3) from Mississippi.  Point was awarded default victories at numbers five and six singles and number three doubles because Blue Mountain was able to put just four players on the court, and the Skyhawks also won at number one and four singles to clinch the team victory.

Blue Mountain's Suzy Bowman and Andria Barnes narrowly defeated Point number one doubles pair, Katie Larck (FR/Champaign, IL) and Luz Padilla (JR/Tucuman, Argentina) by an 8-6 score, and picked up a second doubles point when Olivia Dunnam and Attie Finley defeated Point's number two doubles pair, Taylor Navarro (SR/Boerne, TX) and Martina Belloni (SO/Palamos, Spain) by an 8-5 score.

Point picked up a default point at number three doubles with Eman Cohen (FR/Columbus, GA) and Victoria White (SR/Kokomo, IN) accepting the forfeit.

With Blue Mountain leading 2-1, Barnes defeated Larck at number two singles, 6-2, 7-5, and Dunnam was leading at number three singles, 7-6 and 1-0 in set two, when Belloni fell ill and retired from the match.  Blue Mountain took a 4-1 lead, but Point took default victories at numbers five and six singles and sliced the lead to 4-3.

Needing victories at numbers one and four singles to emerge victorious, Point's number one player, Luz Padilla evened the match at 4-4 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over BowmanCohen faced off with Finley at number four singles and won set one, 7-5.  However, Finley won set two, 7-5, and led set three, 4-1.  Showing uncommon poise for a freshman player, Cohen came back from the deficit to win the set, 6-4, and gave Point its team victory, 5-4.

NEXT MATCHES:  Point hosts a pair of Appalachian Athletics Conference home matches next week at the Sportsplex in Valley, Alabama, playing Bluefield College (Va.), Friday, March 3, at 3 p.m., and Union College (Ky.), Saturday, March 4, at 2 p.m.
