MT. BERRY, Ga. – The Point University men's swimming team totaled 135 points and finished third among four schools at the 2017 Berry College Vikings Swimming Invitational, Jan. 20-21, in Mt. Berry, Georgia.  The Skyhawks set one new school record during the two-day event.

 

Birmingham Southern College (Ala.) won the men's team championship with 849 points, and host Berry College placed second with 612.  Point placed third with 135, and LaGrange College (Ga.) tallied 69 points.

 

Felipe Aguilar (JR/Newnan, GA) established a new school record of 2:37.47 in the 200-yard breaststroke, smashing the old record set earlier this season by 19.26 seconds.  Aguilar also placed fourth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:48.59, and swam Point's lead-off leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay that placed sixth with a time of 1:37.79.  Aguilar was followed by Charlie Donnelly (FR/Newnan, GA), Taylor Nielsen (FR/Columbus, GA) and Raichel DeFreitas (FR/Willemstad, Curacao).

 

DeFreitas, Santos, Aguilar and Nielsen also teamed up for a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

 

Francisco Santos (SO/Bogota, Colombia) placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.48 and tenth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:26.35, and Aguilar placed 12th with a time of 5:36.64.  Nielsen placed eighth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.03, and Donnelly placed ninth in 2:10.25 and Nielsen added a tenth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:24.66.  Nielsen also placed 13th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.90, and Santos placed 16th in 54.81 with Bennett in 19th with a time of 56.12 and Donnelly in 20th in 57.37 seconds.  Jelani Hall (FR/Lithonia, GA) placed 21st in the 100 freestyle in 1:04.19.

 

Four Point swimmers competed in the 50-yard freestyle event, with DeFreitas placing seventh with a time of 23.18 seconds.  Donnelly, Collin Bennett (FR/Newnan, GA), and Hall placed 16th in 26.43 seconds, 17th in 26.61, and 19th in 28.12 respectively.

 

DeFreitas also earned 12 points for Point with a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.12 seconds and picked up five points with an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.06 seconds.  Bennett also placed tenth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.33.
