GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The Point University men's swimming team finished in eighth place among eight schools with 58 points at the 2016 Brenau University Invitational, Nov. 18-19, in the Francis Meadows Aquatics Center in Gainesville, Ga.  The Skyhawks swam three new school relay records and six season-best times in the two-day event.

 

The meet featured four of the top 10 teams in the current NAIA Men's Swimming Coaches' Top 25 poll – number one SCAD-Savannah, number seven Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.), number eight Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) and number nine Thomas University (Ga.).

 

Emmanuel College (Ga.) won the men's team title with 865 points, well ahead of SCAD-Savannah with 651, and Lindsey Wilson with 568.  Fourth-place finisher Thomas University totaled 441 points, and Lindenwood-Belleville scored 416.

 

Francisco Santos (SO/Bogota, Colombia), Taylor Nielsen (FR/Columbus, GA), Felipe Aguilar (JR/Newnan, GA) and Raichel DeFreitas (FR/Willemstad, Curacao) combined for a new school record and season-best time of 3:32.51 and placed 13th among 16 teams in the 400-yard freestyle relay and a new record and season-best of 7:51.37 and placed 11th out of 13 teams in the 800-yard freestyle relay.  The quartet also combined in a different order – Nielsen, DeFreitas, Aguilar and Santos – and placed 17th in the 200-yard medley relay with a school record and season-best time of 1:54.78, and Aguilar, Nielsen, Santos and DeFreitas placed 14th in the 200-yard freestyle relay with an NAIA qualifying time of 1:36.56, just .04 under the standard.

 

Santos also placed 11th in the 1650-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 17:52.39 and placed 13th in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 5:12.36 and also finished 31st in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.03.  DeFreitas also placed 14th in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.62 seconds, 27th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.40 seconds and 27th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.05 seconds.

 

Aguilar also placed 12th in the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 2:11.61, nearly 14 seconds better than the previous best, and also finished 19th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:24.06.  Nielsen also placed 30th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.22 and 39th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.41 seconds.

 

Charlie Donnelly (FR/Newnan, GA) placed 33rd in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:10.25, 45th with a time of 25.91 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 46th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.37 seconds.  Collin Bennett (FR/Newnan, GA) swam a time of 1:06.23 in the 100-yard backstroke and placed 27th.

 

NEXT MEET:  Point University men's swimming, coached by Kaymee Kelly, competes next at the 12th Annual Savannah College of Art and Design Invitational in Savannah, Ga., Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 1-3, in the Chatham County Aquatics Center.
