Women's Cross Country - Sun, Oct. 23, 2016

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The Point University women's cross country team placed 20th among 27 colleges and universities at the 2016 Asics Sand Shark Invitational, presented by Mortgage Network and hosted by the University of South Carolina-Beaufort on UCSB's home course in Hardeeville, S.C., Saturday, Oct. 22.  A total of 244 runners completed the 5000-meter race, and 21 of the colleges represented are members of the NAIA.

 

Milligan College (Tenn.) placed four runners among the top 19 and placed first in the team standings with 70 points.  Hannah Segrave from Milligan won the individual championship with a time of 17:14.33 over the 5000-meter course.  SCAD-Atlanta placed second with 71 points and placed four runners among the top 10, including third-place finisher Greta Van Calcar with a time of 17:34.74.  Southeastern University (Fla.) placed third with 132 and had three runners between places 11 and 18.  Fourth-place Berea College (Ky.) scored 144, and fifth-place Dalton State University scored 159 points, including a fourth-place finish from Emily Poole in 17:43.73.  Tennessee Wesleyan placed sixth with 160 points.

 

Second-place finisher Betsy Douglas covered the course in 17:18.78 for University of South Carolina-Beaufort, the host school, and the fifth and sixth place finishers, Caroline Cook (17:48.29) and Charlotta Zeiler (17:54.25) represented seventh-place team finisher SCAD-Savannah.

 

All 10 of Point's runners posted season-best 5000-meter times in Saturday's race at South Carolina.  Point's number finisher in every meet this season, Rebecca Guadiana (JR/Oak View, CA), placed 42nd in the scoring and 45th among the field of 244 runners with a season-best time of 19:35.20.  Abby Alcantara (FR/Opelika, AL) ran 95th in the scoring and 114th overall with a season-best time of 21:00.05, and Maegan Garritson (SR/Fullerton, CA) placed 99th in the scoring and 119th overall with a season-best time of 21:03.56.  Shelby Garritson (JR/Fullerton, CA) placed 134th in the scoring and 166th overall with a season-best time of 22:25.74, and rounding out the top five was Ashley Kaeser (FR/Rincon, GA), who placed 143rd in the scoring and 179th overall with a season-best time of 22:58.43.

 

Abby Contreras (JR/Peachtree City, GA) was the sixth Skyhawk to cross the finish line, covering the course in a season-best time of 23:36.44 and placing 197th overall and 152nd in the scoring.  Lara McCaughey (SR/Peachtree City, GA) finished 164th in the scoring and 213rd overall with a season-best time of 24:58.04.

 

Kati Williams (SR/Zebulon, GA) placed 215th overall with a season-best time of 25:03.50, and and Tia Pullens (SR/Augusta, GA) placed 223rd in 25:49.24, her best 5000-meter time of the season by nearly five minutes.  Kimberly Irvin (SR/Atlanta, GA) finished 239th overall with a time of 29:46.39.
