NEWNAN, Ga. – The Point University women's cross country teams placed fifth among 11 schools at the 2016 SCAD-Atlanta Invitational, Friday, Sept. 30, at the Coweta County Fairgrounds in Newnan, Ga.

 

SCAD-Atlanta won the team championship with 18 points with the first four finishers and seven runners in the top 10.  Second-place Clayton State (Ga.) scored 86 with three runners in the top 15, and third-place Georgia Southwestern finished with 89 points with three runners among the top 17.  University of West Georgia scored 95 points with runners in fifth, 13th and 18th places, and Point University scored 127 with two runners in the top 19.  SCAD-Atlanta's Emily Kearney won the 5000-meter event with a time of 18:05.47, with teammates Greta Van Calcar second with a time of 18:26.53; Kalie Demerjian in third in 18:56.92; and Maddie Mullen in fourth with a time of 19:13.87.

 

Point's top three runners each posted season-best 5000-meter times in Saturday's race.  Junior Rebecca Guadiana (JR/Oak View, CA), who placed fifth in the 2015 SCAD-Atlanta race, finished seventh among 82 total runners with a season-best time of 19:47.11, and Maegan Garritson (SR/Fullerton, CA) placed 19th with a season-best of 21:50.16.  Abby Alcantara (FR/Opelika, AL) ran 24th with a season-best time of 22:12.64.

 

Shelby Garritson (JR/Fullerton, CA) placed 37th overall and 36th in the scoring with a time of 23:28.01, and rounding out the top five was Ashley Kaeser (FR/Rincon, GA), who placed 42nd overall and 41st in the scoring with a time of 24:34.31.

 

Kati Williams (SR/Zebulon, GA) placed 55th overall and 53rd with a time of 25:50.56, and Lara McCaughey (SR/Peachtree City, GA) finished 58th overall and 55th in the scoring with a time of 26:05.12.  Abby Contreras (JR/Peachtree City, GA) crossed the line in 63rd place with a time of 26:55.80, and Tia Pullens (SR/Augusta, GA) placed 70th in 29:22.01.
