CARROLLTON, Ga. – Point University's Rebecca Guadiana (JR/Oak View, Calif.) placed first in a field of 35 runners, and Point placed third among six schools in the women's 5000-meter cross country race at the 2016 University of West Georgia Home Opener Meet, Friday, Sept. 9, at the UWG Athletics Complex course in Carrollton, Georgia.


Host University of West Georgia placed its top six runners among the top 13, including the third, fourth and fifth place finishers crossing the line in a span of 22 seconds.  UWG also won seventh, 11th and 13th.  Brenau University (Ga.) placed its top five among the first 18, including places two, eight and nine, and Point also placed three runners in the top 10, including Guadiana in first place with a winning time of 20:58.38.  Point also placed sixth and 10th and totaled 54 points, just five points behind Brenau's 49 points.  Clark Atlanta University placed fourth with 122; Tuskegee placed fifth with 125; and LaGrange College took sixth with 128 points.


NEXT EVENT: Coached by Zachery Tyler, Point's women's cross country squad runs next on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the University of North Georgia Invitational in Dahlonega, Ga.  The women's race is scheduled for 8:15 a.m., and the men's race begins at 9 a.m.


POINT WOMEN AT UNIV. OF WEST GEORGIA MEET:  Guadiana, an All-Conference selection and Point's top runner last season as a sophomore, led the pack across the line, finishing just over 34 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Michelle Velazquez from Brenau.  Three West Georgia runners followed in places three through five, and Point's Maegan Garritson (SR/Fullerton, Calif.) placed sixth with a time of 22:53.23.  Her sister, Shelby Garritson (JR/Fullerton, Calif.), placed 10th with a time of 24:18.03.


Abby Alcantara (FR/Opelika, Ala.) ran in 16th place with a time of 25:26.50, and Abby Contreras (JR/Peachtree City, Ga.) crossed the line in 21st place with a time of 27:36.65.  Lara McCaughey (SR/Peachtree City, Ga.) finished 23rd with a time of 28:16.05.
