Women's Cross Country - Sun, Nov. 23, 2014

Lawrence, Kan. -- The Point University women's cross county team finished 33rd out of the 38 team field in the 5K race held at historic Rim Rock Farms.

The 37 teams that participated were either conference champions or at large selections among the 207 colleges and universities that support women's cross country throughout the nation.

Point was also a scoring team due to having five out of the six individual qualifiers from the Appalachian Athletic Conference, which allowed them to score as a team.

"At the meet, I spoke to several long time coaches at the NAIA level and none of them had ever heard of one team sending five individuals to nationals to score as a team," head women's cross country coach Michael Caldwell said. "I am sure it has happened before, but you may have to go back a ways to find the last team to do it."

Junior Samantha Greenlee (JR/Port Richey, Fla.) was the first Skyhawk to cross the line, followed by freshman Becky Guadiana (FR/Oak View, Calif.), junior Savanah Hanna (JR/Alexander City, Ala. ), and freshmen Alycea Heredia (FR/Orcutt, Calif.) and Haley Johnson (FR/Douglasville, Ga.).

"The girls ran with great effort today and for us as a team, we probably ran a little below average," said Caldwell. "The talent level in this race was so high that even if we would have ran really well, we might of only moved up one or two spots at most. Every team is banged up at season's end as one of our top girls was sick and another was battling a knee injury the last three weeks. With only five girls running, and no No. 6 or No. 7 to back you up, you have to do the best you can given your individual circumstances."

The best news for the Lady Skyhawks may be that 10 runners will be returning for 2015 and among those 10, are the Top-5 girls off of the 2014 team.

"We will probably sign two girls to cap off our 2015 team," said CaldwellI. "If we can work hard in the next eight months, 2015 will be another great year for women's cross country at Point University."
